Students for a Sustainable Future EXPO
April 20, 2010 - 6:00 - 9:00 pm
Location: Pace University, Pleasantville, NY - Goldstein Fitness Center
Keynote: 6:15 pm Deb Johnson, Academic Director of Sustainability, Pratt Institute
Since 2006, CELF’s annual Students for a Sustainable Future EXPO has been introducing middle and high school students to innovative, sustainable developments in green business and industry. At the EXPO, students in grades 5–12 explore corporate exhibits and showcase their own projects inspired by sustainability concepts.
This year, EXPO'10 will focus on green schools. In partnership with the Green Schools Coalition of Westchester, CELF invites students, teachers, administrators, facilities and business personnel and parents to explore and explain all the salient aspects of a schools' journey to green.
CELF's Students for a Sustainable Future EXPO was created to provide students with inspiring, positive real-world solutions to global issues in order to ignite their interest in the pursuit of degrees, and eventual career paths, that promote sustainability. Additionally, as more students calculate their ecological footprints, or learn about climate change and its consequences, CELF’s EXPO is an ideal opportunity to share the concepts they have explored during their school year with other students and companies alike. Schools can again participate in the EXPO as visitors or exhibitors.
In 2009, more than 1,500 students, teachers and visitors from around the Tri-State region participated as school communities were introduced to a variety of green practices and to leaders in many fields of sustainable development. Exhibits were diverse and interactive with booths from presenters in science, business, conservation and other fields offered. Twenty-seven schools participated, either by visiting the EXPO on field trips or with booths of their own design. Among the 65 demonstrations and products: Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles; Products designed for deconstruction/product life-cycle analysis; Solar and wind energy products; Water supply solutions for third world countries; Green building developments; Student organic gardening for school cafeterias.
CELF EXPO exhibits interactively demonstrate to students how people all over the world are working to solve environmental, societal and economic challenges, and teach them to integrate these ideas into their everyday lives.

“Last year we came on a class field trip and we couldn’t wait to come back this year to be exhibitors. It was great showing off our student energy audit and what changes we proposed. And it was very cool to be exhibiting right near the energy experts that did the actual work on our building that made it more efficient.”

“It was an honor to be a part of the EXPO. I’ve spent the last 30 years trying to get people to listen about sustainability. The interest expressed by the students was truly heartwarming.”
