Attending the Children’s Environmental Literacy Foundation (CELF) Summer Institute at Lone Star College Kingwood was unlike any professional development I’ve ever experienced. We, as teachers, learned to understand what sustainability means to us, drawing from and connecting to personal and professional experiences. As teachers, we’re often inundated with information in professional development sessions that we rarely utilize afterwards. The CELF Summer Institute was different because we learned about sustainability and environmental literacy in addition to how we can implement the concepts into the content we teach everyday. Through a variety of activities, we learned to show our students how sustainability affects their everyday life. Participants in the Summer Institute were able to create different projects that utilize the Big Ideas of Sustainability and to learn from CELF Master Teachers who have already implemented place-based projects and programs in their own schools. Among the participants were content teachers in Science, Social Studies, and Career-Technical-Education (CTE), as well as school administrators.
The whole experience lasted three days, a fair amount of summer vacation time to give up, especially after a particularly challenging school year, but it was worth every minute. In addition to the traditional classroom work most professional developments include, the CELF team took educators to Jesse Jones Park to demonstrate strategies teachers can use in their schools to get students interested in the ideas of environmental literacy and sustainability. Taking nature walks, creating simulations, and identifying native plants and animals were just a few examples of activities we got to do outside. We also conducted fieldwork at the Lone Star College – Kingwood campus and brought samples back to the science lab to examine. We could all see ourselves doing these types of activities in our own classrooms. Exploring the park and college campus was a nice change of pace compared to the traditional teacher training we usually attend sitting in classrooms for hours at a time.
Looking back, I’m very grateful to have been able to attend the CELF Summer Institute. I expanded my definition of sustainability and learned how to view my content in a different light. With the help of CELF, I have the tools I need to make my students become more environmentally aware and make more informed decisions about how their everyday lives impact the environment.

Reflexión sobre el Instituto de Verano del CELF en Lone Star College Kingwood

Asistir al Instituto de Verano del Children’s Environmental Literacy Foundation (CELF) en Lone Star College de Kingwood fue algo diferente a cualquier desarrollo profesional que he experimentado. Como profesores, siempre nos inundan de información los desarrollos profesionales que rara vez utilizamos después. El Instituto de Verano de CELF fue diferente porque aprendimos sobre la sostenibilidad y la educación ambiental, además de cómo podemos aplicar los conceptos en el contenido que enseñamos todos los días. A través de variedad de actividades, aprendimos cómo podemos mostrar a nuestros alumnos cómo la sostenibilidad afecta sus vidas. Los participantes en el Instituto de Verano pudieron crear diferentes proyectos que implementaron las Grandes Ideas de la Sostenibilidad y aprendieron de maestros que ya han implementado proyectos y programas basados en el lugar en sus propias escuelas. Entre los participantes se encontraban profesores de ciencias, estudios sociales, Career-Technical-Education (CTE), y administradores escolares.
La experiencia completa duró tres días, un gran cantidad de tiempo de las vacaciones de verano para renunciar, especialmente después de un año escolar tan agitado, pero valió la pena. Además del trabajo tradicional que incluye la mayoría de los desarrollos profesionales, el equipo del CELF llevó a los educadores al Parque Jesse Jones para demostrar estrategias que los profesores pueden utilizar en sus escuelas para hacer que los alumnos se interesen en las ideas de la educación ambiental y la sostenibilidad. Hacer paseos por la naturaleza, crear simulaciones e identificar plantas y animales indigenos fueron sólo algunos ejemplos de las actividades que pudimos realizar al aire libre. También realizamos trabajo de campo en el campus de Kingwood del Lone Star College y llevamos muestras al laboratorio de ciencias para examinarlas. Todos nos veíamos realizando este tipo de actividades en nuestras propias clases. Explorar el parque y el campus de la universidad fue un buen cambio de ritmo en comparación con los entrenamientos tradicionales para profesores a los que solemos asistir sentados en un salón de clases por horas.
Mirando hacia atrás, estoy muy agradecida por haber podido asistir al Instituto de Verano de CELF. He ampliado mi definición de sostenibilidad y he aprendido a ver mis contenidos bajo una luz diferente. Con la ayuda de CELF, dispongo de las herramientas necesarias para que mis alumnos sean más conscientes del medio ambiente y tomen decisiones más informadas sobre el impacto que sus vidas tiene en el medio ambiente.
